The spectacular and awe-inspiring Birds of Eden is the largest free-flight single dome aviary in the world. The sanctuary encompasses 2.3ha of forested land, covered by mesh and with a 1.2km walkway. Visitors are welcome to explore at their own pace or request a guided tour at no extra cost. The sanctuary is home to 220 different species & subspecies of birds totaling over 3500 birds. From the indigenous and beautiful Knysna lourie with its awkward call for such a gracious bird, the other lourie (Turaco) species, parrots, parakeets, waterfowl, flamingos, starlings, robins and graceful cranes. The sanctuary includes a deep gorge with a waterfall and the aviary is approximately 50m high, covering all the treetops and allowing ample flying space for its winged inhabitants.
